Liliesleaf 50th Anniversary

July 29th, 2013

Liliesleaf 50th Anniversary Event a success for Black Snow. 11th July 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of the Raid on Liliesleaf in Rivonia. It was a great honour for Black Snow Projects & Events to be selected over numerous event management companies to manage the Gala Dinner to commemorate and mark this historically prestigious event. On 11th July 1963, the police raided Liliesleaf, arresting 18 people including senior leaders of the ANC, SACP and Umkhonto we Sizwe and, including Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, Rusty Bernstein, Raymond Mhlaba, and Arthur Goldreich. Documents found on the premises implicated Nelson Mandela (who was serving already serving a five year sentence for inciting illegal strikes sentence) and as such the apartheid state was able to bring to the Rivonia Trial as co-accused number one. Eight of the ten accused, including Mandela, were sentenced to life in prison. In remembrance of this significant incident, 120 VVIP’s gathered at Liliesleaf on 11th July for a Gala dinner and an evening of reflection, memories and thought. Among the dignitaries attending were President Jacob Zuma, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, three of the surviving four Rivonia Trialists, Sir Bob Hepple, who was one of three remaining survives arrested on the day of the raid and family members.

Observing strict security and safety protocols, the Black Snow Projects & Events team worked diligently to create a flawless experience. We’re pleased to have been able to deliver an impressive evening for those who worked tirelessly and selfless during the struggle to bring about the freedoms we enjoy and take for granted today.
